Title: Exploring the processes and practices of persuasive intervention development: Perspectives, challenges, and opportunities

Abstract: The realisation of behaviour change through persuasive interventions is a rapidly growing area of research and practice. Key to this emerging practice is the drawing together of disciplinary insights from at least psychology, behavioural science, persuasive technology, and design. However, this rapid growth and diverse lineage presents significant challenges to systematising practice. At the root of these challenges is the tension between the multidisciplinary nature of these practices and the typically disciplinary perspectives taken to them in most processes and models. For example, while many current process models share common features, they also frequently offer partially conflicting guidance and often embody seemingly contradictory values. In this keynote, I will explore some of the major challenges facing the development of persuasive interventions, perspectives on these, and potential ways forward for research and practice in the field.

Short Bio: Philip Cash is a Professor at the School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries, Northumbria University. He received a PhD in engineering design from the University of Bath in 2012. His research focuses on design processes with a particular interest in the processes and methods of design for behaviour change. He also works on research quality in design. Over the last decade he has published multiple journal papers on design for behaviour change based on close collaboration with industry as well as co-authors from behavioural science, management, and design.
